How Zakat is calculated

Zakat is 2.5 percent of your net zakatable wealth once it reaches the nisab and has been held for one lunar year (hawl). The nisab is commonly set at 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab because it is lower and benefits more people in need.

What to include

Count cash, bank balances, gold and silver, shares and investments, business stock and money owed to you that you expect to receive. Deduct debts that are due now. Your home, personal car and everyday items are not counted.
